All is not as it seems.

Often, when people use the word `God', they mean to refer to some particular being, possibly with a variety of wonderful properties. I don't always use the word that way on this blog. I reckon religious language can play an important role in community life even without reliance on metaphysical referents for words like `God'. I've sketched out a little about this practice here and here. If you are a religious believer, you might also want to look at this post.

In an attempt to make it clearer when I am using religious language in the conventional way and when I am using it in the madly liberal way outlined above, I've put in hyperlinks to this page on those words which I am using unconventionally. For example if the word `God' is hyperlinked here, that means I'm trying to use it in a way which doesn't rely on it referring to any thing.
